MANAWATU HIGHWAYS BOARD.

The Manawatu Board of Wardens held their usual monthly meeting at the courthouse, Palmerston, on Friday. The member's present wei’e ;—Mr. Snelsou (chairman), Messrs. Dalrymple, Stewart, Farmer, McKenzie, Hughey. The following correspondence was read : Letter from the Provincial Secretary, with cheque enclosed for £75 155., being the first instalment of the amount due to the Board out of the sum voted by the Provincial Council last session. Letter from Mr. P. Stewart, applying for permission to take gravel, forballasting the railway line, from a gravel terrace situated on the road line between wards No. 5 and 6.—Granted. Letter from Mr. D. McKenzie, Carnarvon, objecting to the erection of a gate across a highway adjoining his property, permission to erect the said gate having been asked by Mr. Taylor at a previous meeting.—Resolved, that Mr. Taylor be allowed to erect the gate and use the same until June' 30, 1875. Letter from Mr. Maimvaring, drawing the attention of the Board to the present dangerous state of a portion of the Motoa-road, and asking, on behalf of the natives, to have certain improvements made at once.—Warden Hughey was authorised to call for and accept tenders for the necessary work, about twenty-five chains. A statement from the secretary was laid before the meeting, showing the .financial position of each ward, to date, with an estimate of the funds at the disposal of each for year ending 30th June, 1875. A statement of the collector’s accounts was laid before the meeting. It had been audited by Mr. Keeling and found correct. A statement was read from the secretary, showing the number of meetings attended by each warden, this being the 27th meeting of the Board since its election :—Mr. Snelsou (chairman), attended 25 ; Mr. Dalrymple, 20 ; Mr. Stewart, 25 ; Mr. Fanner, IS ; Mr. McKenzie, 17 ; Mr. Hughey, 10. Mr. Hughey was only elected in November, 1873. A deputation of settlers from Carnarvon waited upon the meeting to lay before them the necessity of doing certain works on a line of road adjoining their property. It was resolved that the matter be left to Warden McKenzie and the Inspector of Works to arrange with the settlers interested, as the Board were not in a position to undertake all the work necessary, but would willingly subsidise any amount the settlers in the district might contribute for that purpose. Warden McKenzie was authorised to undertake certain works in his district, providing the amount required does not exceed the sum at his disposal for the present year. Warden Farmer was authorised to call for tenders for work required to be done on Feeding and Sandon line of road, also for work on Bush line. An extension of time for the acceptance of tenders for the continuation of the Eangitikei line of road to the Public Reserve at Palmerston was granted. A report was read from the Inspector of Works, showing the nature of the work required on road lines in the various wards.—To lie over at present. It was resolved to call for tenders for widening the road line situated in the Scandinavian block above Palmerston. Permission was granted to Messrs. Brogden and Son’s agent to lay and use a tramway on the road line leading from the main tramway to a sawmill now being erected by that firm in the Hokoitu Bush. It was resolved that the salary mf the Inspector of Works he increased at the rate of £lO per annum* increase to date from November 1, 1871. An application from Messrs. Linton and others, of Sandon, was allowed to lie over at present. A tender was accepted from Millsou and Co. for clearing a road line at' £1 10s. per chain. A tender was accepted from Erenstrom and Co. for work on Te Maitai-road at £2 4s. fid. per chain, and £l9 for bridges. A tender for the same from P. Haggerty was declined, the sum being £156 17s. The Board is to meet again on Friday, the Bth of January, 1875.
