[Peess Telegeapu Agency.] Auckland, Thursday. A man named Thomas Kelly has been killed while falling a tree at Mahurangi. Thompson, the absconder, was captured after an exciting chase last night. Quick, who was on the look-out at the North Head, observed a boat at Eangitoto Eeef, and sent to town for a steamer and the police. Thompson observed the boat coming, and went ashore and concealed himself in the scrub. After three hours’ search, they nabbed their man. He had .£l6O in cash on him. The prisoner was lodged in the lock-up. He has been drinking heavily lately. Otherwise he was regarded as a trustworthy man. Inveecakoill, Thursday. The annual show of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held to-day. The weather was delightful, and there was a large attendance. There was a good show of horses. Sheep, pigs, and cattle were not so well represented. Napieb, Thursday. Payne, a sailor on board the ship Helen Denny, fell down the hatch into the hold. Ho is seriously injured internally, and lies at the hospital in a precarious state. The young man had shipped at Wellington for the run home. Madame Goddard was well received last night in a crowded house. She leaves for Auckland on Friday. George Gear has been remanded to Poverty Bay on a charge of selling fire-arms without a license. He will bo brought before the magistrate on Saturday, and remanded to Marton.
