[Peess Telegeapu Agency.] Auckland, Thursday. A man named Thomas Kelly has been killed while falling a tree at Mahurangi. Thompson, the absconder, was captured after an exciting chase last night. Quick, who was on the look-out at the North Head, observed a boat at Eangitoto Eeef, and sent to town for a steamer and the police. Thompson observed the boat coming, and went ashore and concealed himself in the scrub. After three hours’ search, they nabbed their man. He had .£l6O in cash on him. The prisoner was lodged in the lock-up. He has been drinking heavily lately. Otherwise he was regarded as a trustworthy man. Inveecakoill, Thursday. The annual show of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held to-day. The weather was delightful, and there was a large attendance. There was a good show of horses. Sheep, pigs, and cattle were not so well represented. Napieb, Thursday. Payne, a sailor on board the ship Helen Denny, fell down the hatch into the hold. Ho is seriously injured internally, and lies at the hospital in a precarious state. The young man had shipped at Wellington for the run home. Madame Goddard was well received last night in a crowded house. She leaves for Auckland on Friday. George Gear has been remanded to Poverty Bay on a charge of selling fire-arms without a license. The proclamation creating Napier a munlcinalitv.hna linon ■ Mr. W, Koutledge, M.P.G., lias been created secretary, and Mr. F. Sutton, M.P.G., treasurer, of the new Jockey Club. The races will probably be held next March. Tadeanga, Thursday. David Stuart Dyell, agent for the Bank of New Zealand at Marton, was apprehended at Taupo late last night, on a charge of cm-' bezzlem'ont. He will bo brought before the magistrate on Saturday, and remanded to Marton.
