THE EDUCATION BOARD.
■fP'ir 1 hav , e ,y° r y little t 0 sa y to set myself right with the public in regard to the accusations of incorrect statements" and calumny" brought against me by Messrs. Hutchison and Toomatb, members of the Education Board. Knowing that Mr. Hutchison did printing for the Board, which he owns and acknowledges payment for, and not knowing that the business was managed in the way Mr. Hutchison states it is done, it was only reasonable on my part to concur in the general opinion that he was the printer to the Board. He owes me adebt of gratitude for enabling him to set himself right. I had determined to take other notice of Mr. Toomath’s letter than through your columns, but seeing that article* 1 on the law of libe 1 , copied into your columns from the Wanganui Chronicle, induced me to be cautious. Mr. Toomath must not have his wits about him when he gives the flattest contradiction to the statement that Mr. Graham, who acted as member of the Board since its foundation up to April last, was not the gentleman who acted as secretary also for that time, at a salary of £3OO per annum. Also that Mr. Brandon, member for Wellington, is not the Mr. Brandon who has charge of the Bees bequest case, I cannot hold him responsible for Mr. Hutchison’s letter, as they were both of the same date. If Mr. Toomath reads your paper, and your evening contemporary, he should have asked you and your contemporary to correct those statements, referred to by me, at the time of their publication. The Kev. Mr. Andrews. M.E.8., does not know the times of meeting of the Board, as is evident from the plain statement to that effect published by your contemporary a month ago or less. Mr. Toomath owns to having received payment in the shape of travelling expenses as itinerant inspector. In conclusion, sir, I shall call on Mr. Toomath to retract the charge bronght against me by him, he having full knowledge of these facts at the time he penned his letter to you ; otherwise, I shall not again reply to any of his accusations. I also challenge Mr. Hutchison to prove the inaccuracies he complains of. I shall be ready to prove any statement I have made at any time through your columns, should you favor me with your space, should it be desirable.—l am, &c., Amicus. Kovember 14.
