MANAWATU DISTRICT.

The Board of Wardens held their monthly meeting at the Court-house, Palmerston, on Friday, the Gth inst. The members present were Messrs. Snelson (chairman), Dalrymple, Stewart, Farmer, and Hughey. The following business was transacted: — Letter from His Honor the Superintendent, in answer to ono sent by the Chairman of the Board drawing the attention of the Government to the dangerous state of the Foxton and Sandon and Eangitikei roads, through damage done by the late floods. Tenders are to be called for immediately by the Government for all necessary works on the above-named roads, and any extra culverts that may bo required in the Palmerston and Oroua lino are to bo proceeded with at once by the workmen at present employed on the line. Letter from the Provincial Secretary, informing the Board that the sum of £393 Ids., due to them out of the £50,000 voted by the General Assembly to Itoad Boards, will bo paid in three equal instalments, viz., on the Ist December. 1874, and Ist February and Ist April, 1876, respectively; and further, that the subsidy to Hoad Boards voted in the annual Appropriation Act of the Provincial Council of last session, will bo payable in five monthly instalments, on the 12th November and December, 1874, and January, February, and March, 1875, respectively. Eequisitions tor payment of instalments enclosed in letter. Letter from Messrs. Kilgour, Linton, and others, residents in Sandon district, asking the Board to undertake certain necessary works required on a line of road leading to their properties, which at the present time is represented as being unfit for dray traffic. Unsolved that the matter lie over until next Board meeting. Applications from Major Mcßarnett, Messrs, Short, . Lethbridge, and Taylor for permission to erect gates across highways adjoining their properties, were allowed to lie over for ono month, as is usual with such applications. Letter from Mr. Eichardson, Palmerston, drawing the attention of the Board to a certain pool of water opposite to his residence, and asking them to take the necessary steps to have the same removed. The Inspector of Works was instructed ta visit the spot and report to the Board at its next meeting. Letter from Warden McKenzie, stating his inability to attend the meeting, and asking tor authority to call for tenders for various works required in his ward. Resolved that it lie over tiU next meeting. Report from Inspector of Works, showing the various works required on the Jackytown-road, consisting chiefly of bridges and culverts. Resolved that plans and specifications bo made out, and tenders called with the least possible delay; and for falling and clearing eighty chains, of bush lino loading to Millson and others' property situated in the Hangitikei lino district. The chairman was requested to write to the Provincial Government for assistance in opening up this line of road, as it will be the main line, collecting the Rangltlkci-road with the new township, which is now being surveyed at the junction of the Palmerston and Foxton tramway with that of the Wellington and Wanganui railway; likewise to write to the Minister tor Public Works, asking assistance from the General Government in making n road to connect the township of Pending with the Palmerston and Wanganui lino, as at tile present time the Fcilding people have no available road for traffic, and the Board is most anxious to have the work finished

before the next winter. Mr. Dalrrmple was authorised to call for tenders for certain works in his ward. Application from the Inspector of Works for increase of salary, to be considered at the next meeting of the Board. .Report from the secretary showing an increase of rates from land assessed this year, amounting to £159. The collector was instructed to prepare a statement of his accounts for the past year in order to have the same audited at the next meeting. The Board meets again on Friday, the 4th December next, at 10 a. m.
