Lyster, for not coming to the Colonies from, San Francisco, is the rather startling one that the Californian mail steamers had been discontinued, thus upsetting the arrangements which had been made. This was conveyed in a telegram on the 16th ult. A dozen messages passed between them, each time over a distance of 20,000 miles. Frank Varley, scenic artist, well-known in Wellington, sued the proprietor of the Criterion restaurant, Melbourne, for £3OO damages for an assault. Frank had had a sixpenny plate of fish. The proprietor said he had two, and gave him a black eye and cut his mouth. The evidence was in favor of the plaintiff, and he was awarded £5 damages. This once purely local decoration, having been enlarged so as to include all services connected with any of the Colonies, may form, if judiciously used, a valuable instrument for welding more strongly the bond of sympathy between the mother country and dependencies, which, if judiciously strengthened, may go far to replace the ideal central legislature of Colonial enthusiasts. In this new Gazette 'are side by side to be found Englishmen who have held office in the Colonies, and colonists who have become distinguished in their own dependencies.”
