NELSON.
From the Nelson Examiner's received by the Bonnie Doon we regret to learn the death of F. Otterson, Esq., one of the earliest and most valued settlers of that Province, who was drowned in crossing the Wairau river. Mr. Otterson was travelling with Messrs. Wells and Elliott. The river was in a swollen state from melted snow, and the party forded the river just above its junction with the Branch. It is supposed" Mr. Otterson kept ' too near the fall, and horse and rider were rolling over together in the stream when Mr. Elliott, who had crossed! over first, rushed into the current, and seized' Mr., Otterson by his' coat, 'but was unfortunately unableto save him; 1 his foqjt 'being fast in the stirrup^ The body was carried away by the stream and was found three miles below where the-accident happened. Five cases were trie^d,, and the Court, owing to the absence at the Wairau of a material witness in the sixth case adjourned to the 9th, that being the latest day upon which His Honor could calculate on being at Nelson.' ' ' The Eev. S. Ironside had been thrown from his horse while riding near Eichmond, and sustained a fracture of the leg. He was removed to the house of Mr. Hewitt) where he received every attention.
