Wakefield, Esq., and the other members of the House of Representatives who supported his policy in relation to the setting apart of land for the labouring classes, and on the 25th a soiree was Held at the Odd Fellows' Hall of the settlers of Auckland, at which an, address was presented to Mr. E. G. 'Wakefield in » acknowledgment of the services he had ren--dered to that Province. On each occasion .Mr. Wakefield made a' speech -of considerable length enforcing his views, and defending the course he had pursued in the House of Representatives, which was received with much cheering, and other 'demonstrations of applause. A correspondence is published in the New Zealander of the 23rd Sept., cp^sjstjng, of a from Mr. Titzgerald denouncing Mr. Wakefield in the fiercest ieims, with .Mr. Wakefield's reply, in whjc^ .after answering Mr. Fitzgerald's attacks on him, he professes to draw the' latter irom 'the life, observing ,that "with respect to general character, I owe him sncl| a picture of his own as shall enable fine -public to appreciate his description of jminei Its f accuracy will be admitted by all who know him, or shall cometo know him as f well as I do."
