NEW ZEALAND SPECTATOR AND Cook's Strait Guardian. Wednesday, February 8, 1854.

The report 'of the proceedings in Council, which occupies ,a considerable space in our columns, includes the debates to the' adjournment at six o'clock on Friday. In our next number we intend giving the report of the discussions in the evening sitting, which will conclude the session. The Council adjourned for a fortnight, and on its reassembling it is understood the business will be chiefly of a formal nature.

During the past week a serious amount of damage has been caused by fires in the -Karon' district. For some days previous the fire had been smouldering among the dry grass and' wood, in different directions, and the recent dry weather contributed to its spread ; but on Wednesday a strong N.W. wind springing up, the flames broke out with great violence, and extended over a considerable area. The houses of Mr. Bowler, Senr., and Mr. Cole were completely burnt down, and all thefurniture and other property they contained consumed : Mr. Mootrie's bam, and two haystacks, and a barn belonging to Mr. G. Collier were also burnt. The fires continued on Friday , and Saturday, when providentially a change occurred in the .weather, and the seasonable rain which fell on Sunday, and Monday has had the effect-, of extinguishing the fires and preventing further loss ; but several of the inhabitants of the district have suffered severely in the destruction of their property, and all were in state of great alarm" and anxiety, as it was impossible to say how far the fires would spread.
