To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator. Wellington, August 4, 1853.
Sir, — The placards in the shops and letters in the Independent shew that the liberal candidates are shaking. It is not so clear a walk over as they expected : joint committees, more treating, slang and abuse have become the order of the day. It would be pitiful, but that it is now too common to see the men we were accustomed to respect acting the political timeservers, toadies when it serves their pnrpose, vipers when such purpose fails. I am, your's truly, OBSERVER.
