To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator.

Sir, — I beg you .will find space for two words as to the position , of qertain candidates in relation to' jtlie Company's debt. The members of the ConstJtutionalAssojciation bound themselves in honour to support the Company's claim if the Directors would procure the management of ihe waste lands to be placed in the settlers' hands. The Directors have fulfilled their part of the bargain as far as they had the power. The meib-' bers of the Association are bound to do their

part. Unless they repudiate their engagements, !in which case away go their claims to public! I confidence, ' - - ! The resolution proposed by Mr. Fitzherbert sacrifices the case of the colonists. It admits the principle of the debt which the settlers dispute^ whether it was designed for this purpose or not may be doubtful, but as far it goes it carries out the arrangement made by the Association with the Directors, If the settlers agree td this resolution they shut themselves out from (he strongest ground which can be taken against the Corflpany, namely That the arrangement between the Company and the Government, out of which the debt arises, was based' upon a misrepresentation of facts on the part of the Company. If we, on being called upon to pay the debt, have a right to question its amount, we have also a right to question its existence. And that is our strong ground. I am, Sir, your obedient servaflr, £RO BONO PUBLICO
