STEAM WHARF.

The following correspondence on the subject of the proposed wharf for steam vessels hasbeen forward to us for publication, and we have been 'requested to direct the attention of the public to the meeting to be held to morrow at the Mechanics' Institute, to consider the best steps to be taken to promote this object, which is one of very great importance to the general interests 6*f this Province. To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator. Wellington, March 14, 1853. Sir, — I enclose for publication a letter I have received from the Civil Secretary's office respecting tbe erection of a jetty in this harbour. I would beg to suggest that a public meeting be held at tbe Mechanics' Institute, on Thursday next, the 17th inst., at twelve o'clock, to take the same into consideration. ' I am, Sir, your obedient servant, Chas. Clifford.

Civil Secretary's office, Wellington, March lltb, 1853. Sir, — I bare (be honour to request, by command of bia Excellency Sir George Grey, that you will have the goodness to inform the gentlemen who signed the Memorial addresser) to his Excellency on the subject of tbe erection of a kuiitble Jetty for the accommodation of steam vessels in tbe harbour of this port, — that plans and estimates of the cost of erecting such a wbarf having been furnished, it is found that the expense that would have to be incurred in completing this work would be so large as to be totally beyond the means of tbe Local Government. The Government will, however, be willing to consider any plao that may be submitted by a Company for its consideration, by which a portion of the land in Lambton Harbour alresdy reclaimed, or of that which is still below high water mark, may be vested in them upon condition of j their erecting such a wharf or jetty in that harbour j as may be approved by the Government. : I have tbe honour to be, Sir, Your most obedient humble servant, Alfred Domett, Civil Secretary. Charles Clifford, Esq., &c, Wellington.
