On Tuesday evening as the Hon. H. Petre was returning from Wellington to the Hutt in his gig, his horse took fright, when within about a muc from the Kora Kora, and started off at full speed. Mr. Hayward, who was a short distance a-head with his van in which were several passengers, guessing what had happened, drew his vehicle on one side the road to allow the gig to pass, but a collision took place when the wheel of the gig was broken, and Mr. Petre was thrown out and, we regret to learn, received a compound fracture of therisrht arm. Mrs. Daniell, who was in the van, became alarmed and jumped out, and her diess having by some means been caught by the gig, she was dragged a considerable distance until the horse was stopped and further mischief prevented. We understand that Mr. Petre is doing well and in a fair wav of recovery from the effects of his accident, and that Mrs. Daniell, although severely bruised, providentially escaped without any serious injury.
