We have received an Auckland Paper of Sth March by ithe overland mail. From the annual returns published in the Government Gazette, it appears that the total European population of the Province of New Munster at the end of the year 1850, excluding the military and their families, amounts to 10,372 souls. The total number of acres under cultivation in the northern Province was 8,082£, the uncultivated land (purchased land but not bought under cultivation) amounted to 30,122 - acres. Of Stock there were 725 horses, 6,803 horned cattle, 3 281 sheep, and 345 goats. Corporal Butcher of the 58th Regt., had been tried at the last sitting of the Supreme Court, for the murder of private McKeown of the same regiment and found guilty of manslaughter. Heki, a native of the Sandwich Islands had also been tried for the murder-of Maitara also a native of the Sandwich Islands, and had been found guilty of manslaughter. Both prisoners were sentenced to transportation for life.
