New Zealand Spectator, AND COOK'S STRAIT GUARDIAN. Saturday, January 26, 1850.
H. M. Steamer Acheron arrived on Wednesday from Auckland. The St. Michael had arrived there January Bth, and was to sail immediately after the Acheron for this port. The latest English News received at Auckland was up to Sept. 18th, of which we have made extracts from the New Zealander and the Southern Cross. The most important intelligence from the North, is the account of the native quarrel between two divisions of the Waikato tribe which seems to threaten disagreeable results, unless the Government by its mediation, prevent further mischief. j
We have re-published from last Thursday's Government Gazette, Capt. Russell's excellent Report on the completion of the Military Road, executed under his superintendence, which is well worthy an attentive perusal. Want of room compels us to reserve some observations we intended to make on this subject, to our next number.
By private letters we learn that the mail sent by the Princess Helene, (which vessel sailed from Port Nicholson for Valparaiso on the Ist May) arrived in England on the sth September. Whalebone, according to the latest accounts, had risen in the English market, the price being from £180 to £190 per ton.
On Wednesday the sports announced in the programme (with the exception of the canoe race, war dance, and bullock race) took place on Te Aro Flat ; there was a considerable number of persons present, and the amusements terminated in the evening with a display of Fireworks.
