Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, 10th October, 1849. r pHE HEADS of the several religious -*- denominations in this Province named in Ordinance of Council No. 10, of Session 8, are hereby requested to transmit to this Office, on or before the Ist of January, 1850, a list of all Teachers employed in connection with their Church, in instructing Aboriginal Natives or Half Castes at Day Schools^ distinguishing Native from European Teachers ; stating the localities at which such Teachers are stationed j their names, and the dates of the commencement of their labours as daily instructors at such Schools ; together with the average numbers of Native or Half Caste children of each sex, separately specified, attending at each School for the three months previous to the date of the return. These returns are required in order that a sum of Five Hundred Pounds, which has been recommended to be appropriated by the Executive Council of this Province under the " Education Ordinance," for the benefit of Aboriginal Natives and Half. Castes only, may be equitably apportioned by the Council amongst the heads of the several denominations referred to in the Ordinance. No Sunday Schools, or Teachers of Sunday Schools only, to be included in the return, ' but only Day Schools and Daily Teachers. > Bbarding Schools should be classed sepa- j rately, and the same particulars stated as are required with regard to Day Schools, and any other information which may be thought interesting or useful in relation to the subject. WITH REFERENCE to the advertisement which appeared in the Government Gazette of the 12th June last, His Excellency the Lieutenant- Governor directs it to be notified that the Road to the Wairarapa through the Valley of the Hutt and over the Rimutaka Range has been reopened for the passage of Cattle, &c, during the summer season, and until further notice. By His Excellency's Command, Alfred Domett, Colonial Secretary.

HIS EXCELLENCY THE LIEUTE-NANT-GOVERNOR directs it to be notified that those persons who, in erecting fences on land in the Lower Valley of the Hutt, have encroached on any portion of the new line of road in that locality, or who have not kept such fences, at least half a chain from the centre of the roadway, will not be recompensed by the Government for any damage they may sustain from "the burning off of the logs, brushwood, &c, accumulated along the roadsides, which will take place next month. j I By his Excellency's Command, Alfred Domett, Colonial Secretary.
