New Zealand Spectator, AND COOK'S STRAIT GUARDIAN. Wednesday, May 16, 1849.

We understand that Port Cooper is definitively fixed on as the site of the Canterbury Settlement, Mr. Fox having obtained the sanction of his E/cellency the Governor-in-Chief to the necessary preliminary arrangements. Mr. Wills returns to England, having been despatched by Mr. Thomas as the bearer of the intelligence to the Canterbury Association. The Ennerdale had arrived at Auckland, and may be daily expected at Wellington.

The Council were chiefly engaged yesterday in Committe on the Census Bill. The length to which our report of its proceedings h-s extended has obliged us to defer to our next number some observations we intended to offer on the Estimates.

A General Court Martial assembled in the Officers' Mess Room, 65th Regt., on the 14th inst., by order of Lieut.-Col. M'Cleverty, for the trial of a private, 65th Regt. President, Major Patience, 65th Regt., Capt. O'Connell, 65th Regt., Acting Deputy Judge Advocate.

We have been requested to publish the following 1 letter for the information of the public : — H.M.S. Acheron, Wellington, May 14, 1849. Sir. — Your Excellency bavin? represented to me the inconvenience felt in the town of Wellington from the want of true time, I have the honor to inform you that daring the Acheron's stay in this harbour, a flag will be displayed every da} 7 at the main Royal mash head oft Hat ship ten minutes before, & be hauled down at the hour of twelve, mean time. I have, &c, (Signed) L. Lort Stokes, Captain. His Excellency the Lieut.-Governor, &c. &c.
