But you are not too old to learn, nor too obstinate to take advice honestly offered. Whenever you receive a letter which irritates you take time to answer it ; and if very offensive, return it unanswered. An impertinent letter impertinently answered places you on a level with your correspondent. Hard hits do not require hard words ; and unless where plain truth must needs be offensive, it may be better to abstain from giving offence. There will come a day when the settlers will have to choose their rulers ; then this crowning act of yours will remove much prejudice, and then the soi disant patriots will reap the reward which they are earnestly, though unintentionally, labouring to merit.
