ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

-Thb following letters have teen, forwarded -to us for In^e/t^on :

' - ' " T6 GrBOBGB HT7XTEB, EBQ., Sib, — On behalf of, sober people I thanl^ you for the noble stand you hare mad© against the est&j blishment of duelling in thi^gsetflement. ' J^Tour' pb^MjjqlsVia'nptijQflW tb.be formed ; your repu't'fctidn is f^iiiovo tiiQ-rep^of a posted: libel.. .

But you are not too old to learn, nor too obstinate to take advice honestly offered. Whenever you receive a letter which irritates you take time to answer it ; and if very offensive, return it unanswered. An impertinent letter impertinently answered places you on a level with your correspondent. Hard hits do not require hard words ; and unless where plain truth must needs be offensive, it may be better to abstain from giving offence. There will come a day when the settlers will have to choose their rulers ; then this crowning act of yours will remove much prejudice, and then the soi disant patriots will reap the reward which they are earnestly, though unintentionally, labouring to merit. Your's sincerely, Common Sense. Wellington, March 27, 1849.
