New Zealand Spectator, AND COOK'S STRAIT GUARDIAN. Wednesday, November 1, 1848.
The European news received from Sydney by the Scotia is of such deep interest that we have endeavoured to give as many extracts as our limits would allow. An outbreak of the most serious nature had occured in Paris, threatening to plunge that city
and France into a state of frightful anarchy, which has only been averted by a terrible sacrifice of human life. In England several Chartist demonstrations had taken place, but these had been put down without difficulty by the Government. From the present aspect of affairs it seems but too probable that Europe is on the eve of a general war.
The Triumph arrived yesterday from Nelson, having- called on ber way at Queen Charlotte's Sound. Mr. Toms, who is a passenger from the latter place, states that the natives report an eruption to have taken place on the night of the 17th ult. at the Bluff, halfway between the mouth of the Wairau river and Cape Campbell, and tnat a large fissure had been made in the Wairau near the native cultivations, about ten miles from the mouth of the river. The natives, among whom was Te Rauparaha, had left in alarm and proceeded to Otaki.
The wreck of the SubraonvrßiS soldi on Monday by Messrs. James Smith and Co., for the sum of five hundred and fifteen pounds.
The Scotia left Sydney on the 6th, but returned in consequence of having sprung a leak under the counter, this was soon repaired, and she sailed again on the 12th October. The Louis and Miriam which sailed after, anchored at the Heads on Monday evening. The Scotia saw a Barque in the Strait, supposed to be the Ralph Bernal for England.
