the Witness of that date. It is the only in-! formation of any interest in the paper before us. Two letters are said to have been received from Mr. A. Tretorius, one addressed to a private individual, and the other to Captain Kyle, the Secretary of the Land Commission, containing Mr. P.'s resignation. Rumours of confusion and stiifeare as prevalent as ever, but little notice is taken of them here. It is said that his Excellency's proclamations respecting the systems of Government proposed for (he new Districts, have been rejected ; that the boers have assembled in full force, and intend to drive or lead Panda down upon us ; and that the natives towards the Drakenb-rg direction are much alarmed at present appearances. About a dozen wagons on their way to tliis colony, are said to have been ordered back by a patrol sent from ihe Achterberg Boers for that purpose. Report also say that the spies of a native chief have retui nevi, and confirm the suspicions entertained. They say the most extraordinary preparations are being made for a contest. In the'mUst of these alarms Pietermaritzburgis perfectly tranquil and indifferent. The 1 Cape colonists seem to have had their suspi- i cions awakened a mouth ago. |
