CAPE OF GOOD HOPE.
[From the Australian ] We have Cape papers to the 29th June, from which we have made the following extracts :—: —
[From the Zvid Afrikaan, June 29.] The Kafirs. — According to the accounts received by yesterday's post, several depredations have again been recently committed. The Giaham's Town Journal notices amoug others the following as a case of great audacity: — "Lieut. Dawson, 45th Regt., while proceeding on Monday from Fort White to Fort Cox, (a distance of seven or eight; miles,) in British Kaffraria, was stopped by two Kaffirs, who robbed him of his coat, saddle bag, containing some wearing apparel, shot belt, and powder flask. They also took ihe bridle off his horse, leaving Lieut. D. to resume his journey as he best could. He had been out shooting, but had fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately) left his gun at Fort White. He had some rridney^ about him; and this, it is stated, was taken with his other property — in fact stripping him of every article, except his shirt and trousers, and in which plight he had to find his way to quarters." During the discussion in the Legislative Council at Cape Town on the 23rd June, it was ascertained that his Excellency the Governor had received a despatch from the Secretary of State, intimating that it bad pleased her Majesty to create a separate Legislative Council for the District of Natal. Henceforth, therefore, that place will be wholly-in-dependent of this colony. On the second reading of the bill for abolishing newspaper stamps, which was warmly supported by Messrs. Harries, Ebden, and the Attorney-General, Mr. Ebden observed that his Excellency having declared that it would be an open question, he hoped that on all such questions arising the Government would be equally generous.
