Governor Robe having applied to Earl Grey for a portrait of the Queen for Government House, was informed that it was no longer customary to send portraits, but that' if the money were remitted he would send a suitable representation of the Sovereign. A bill to enable the evidence of aboriginal natives to be taken, is before the Legislative of South Australia. Seventeen inquests were held in South Australia in the quarter ending June 30th ; they were nearly all cases of accident. An application has been made to the Legislative Council of South Australia for a grant of £1000 towards erei ting a building for the Mechanics' Institution of Adelaide. A petition was in circulation, praying that the slaughtering of sheep. pig««, &c, in Adelaide, may be prevented ; bullocks can only be slaughtered in one place. By a return of legistered mortgages in South Australia, it appears that the amount registered in 1844 was £20,038; in 1845, £12,462 ; in 1846, £37,240 : and in 1847, £34,041. A similar return of 'bills of sale, judgments, and warrants of attorney, shovisin 1844, the amount was £22,133} in 1845, £23,761; in 1846, £70,879 ; in 1847, £13,581. Seventy-nine thousand nine hundred letters, and one hundred and twenty-three thousand nine hundred newspapers, passed through the Adeh.ide Post Office in 1847 — an increase of about thirty per cent, on the previous year.
