The will of the late John Walter, Esq., of Bearwood Hall, Berks, and Printing House Square, London, was executed by him on the 9th ot February, 1847, and he died on the 28th of July. He has devised to his son, John Walter, Esq., M.P. for Nottingham, the entire freehold premises and warehouses belonging to the Times, in Printing House Square, and leaves him all his interest in the business. The freehold and copyhold estates which he possessed in the counties of Berks and Wilts, together with the right of presentation to St. Katherine's Church, Bearwood, he leaves to the trustees under the terms of the settlement on the marriage of his son. The residue of his real and personal estate to his wife, Mrs. Mary Walter, for her own absolute use, and lias appointed her sole executrix. The personalty was valued for probate duty at £90,000.
More Extensive Failures. — Two further failures of large amount were reported this moruing on the Corn Exchange, the parties being Messrs. Coventry and Shepherd, and Messrs. King. Melvil, & Co. The liabilities were not stated, but they are supposed in each case to reach to about £202,000. Mr. Coventry was of the firm of Hunter and Coventry, which stopped in 1842, and King and Melvil also stopped at that period. In the present instance great efforts had been made to sustain both houses through the credit of their connections, and the fact of these efforts having failed augurs, it may be feared, somewhat unfavourably for the final result. The immediate cause of the suspension of King, Melvil, & Co., is stated to have been the return of a bill of Lesley, Alexander, & Co., for £18,000. Another suspension was also mentioned, but u was a small affair, not exceeding £4000, and the credit of the party had for some time been questionable. The total amount of the liabilities of the various firms whose failures have been reported on the Corn Exchange during the present pressure is now estimated at £1,300,000. — Times.
