To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator. Wellington, January 18, 1848. " Audi Alieram Partem.' 1 Sir, — With reference to the Public Shorts for this, the Eighth Anniversary, I f> read an article stated to be "communicated" in your last number. Had the cranium of the paity who penned that communication had the bump of inquisitiveness properly developed he would readily have ascertained that Col. Wakefield, in his private capacity, and not as Principal Agent to the New Zealand Company, had given the liberal donntion of five guineas and udwards to the different funds for the Public Sports proposed to be carried out at the Eighth Anniversary. I have no connection whatever with the New Zealand Company, and their Principal Agent is well able to defend himself, but as"the. facts above stated happen to be within my own knowledge, and h ying always found Col. Wakefield exceedingly liberal in money matters, I beg you to insert this short note from a Lover of Fair Play.

Wangantxi. — The Catherine Ann, on coining down the Wanganui river, struck on a snag opposite Shakespeare's Cliff, and filled with water, but the cargo was recovered without being damaged, and the vessel was subsequently repaired. The Mary Ann had gone to Nelson for timber for the stockade, and the Fisherman iad sailed for Porirua, and was afterwards to proceed to Taranaki for a cargo of flour for the supply of the troops at Wanganui. ■
