WANGANUI.

From private accounts by the Katherine Johnstone which arrived here from Wanganui on Thursday night, after an excellent run of only twenty-four hours, we learn that Turoa, a principal chief of that district, has just died, and that considerable apprehension existed in the minds of some of the settlers therp, lest they should receive another visit from the lava of the Taupo tribes in consequence, but we are assured on very good authority, that these alarms are without foundation. We have been favoured with the following obituary of the deceased chief: —

Died — on the 9th Sept., Turoa, one of the principal chiefs of the Wanganui district, and closely conneced by blood with most of the principal chiefs of Taupo, Rotorua, and Waikato ; be has been a very turbulent man during the whole of his life, but in his last dayshe strongly advocated peace, and only about two hours before his death, caused himself to be dressed in all his clothes, and again exhorted the assembled chiefs to live in peace, and to let war be for ever buried with him in the grave. As he has been a man of great influence, there is every reason to suppose that this, his dying speech, will be attended with very beneficial results to the district \o which he belonged.
