REVENUE RETURNS.

The New Zealand Gazette of Thursday last contains the revenue returns for the December quarter, 1875, showing in detail the receipts and expenditure. On this occasion we shall confine our remarks to the Consolidated Revenue, with which the Colonial Treasurer is principally concerned. The total receipts, under the head of Consolidated Revenue, for the period in question was £416,496 7s. Id., of which A'12,647 ss. lid. was from railways. The bulk of the revenue, however, was derived from Customs, no less than £319,133 9s. 6d. being collected in duties, fees, &c, last quarter. It may be interesting to our readers to present the various heads of Consolidated Revenue, to illustrate the sources -whence it is drawn. Thus :

If we contrast the foregoing figures with the returns for the last September quarter, an increase is shown under every head except "incidental receipts." The Customs revenue for the September quarter, 1875, was £268,869, against £319,133 in the last quarter of the year. Thus for the first half of the current financial year, the Customs yielded £588,002, being at the rate of £1,176,004 per annum. The estimate of the Colonial Treasurer for the year 1875-6 was £1,346,750 for Customs, so that it will require a very considerable increase during the second half of the year if the estimate is to be realised. It is to be hoped that it may be so, although the general prospects of trade do not w r arrant us cherishingany very sanguine hopes on the subject. There is a remarkable contrast between the incidental receipts of the September and December quarters, the former showing £17,223, and the latter £5509. This, however, does not possess any significance on the general bearings of the question, and we mention it as a mere incident in the returns.
