IMMIGRATION.

We have to thank Mr. Bkown*, Regis-trar-General, for the annexed return of immigration and emigration during the year 1875. From the statement it will be seen that the excess of immigration over emigration for the past year was 25,694, of whom 15,113 were males and 10,581 females. The net gain of population by immigration was made up as under :

From United Kingdom -. 21,437 From British Colonies .. .. - - 1.957 From other places .. .. .. 2,280 These figures are highly satisfactory, and prove the high esteem in which New Zealand is held. The following is the statement in question :
