Bluff, Saturday. The s.s. Ringarooma left Hobson’s Bay on the 11th inst. at 11 a.m. Passed Swan Island at 9 a.m. next day, and arrived at the Bluff at 9 a.m. on the 16th. She experienced strong easterly winds, and a cross sea on the passage. She transhipped the mails and passengers from the Mongolia on the morning of the 11th. She brings 355 tons of cargo, seventyseven saloon, and fifty-eight steerage passengers for all ports. She sails for Dunedin at four this afternoon. (reuter’s special cable messages.) . London, January 5. The New South Wales 4 per cent, loan of £901,500 was subscribed for to-day. The tenders were for nearly a million and a half; the minimum was 92J ; two-thirds of the loan realised £92 13s. "Yesterday a 44 per cent, loan of a million partly failed, as only £390,000 was tendered for at and above the sealed mini mum of 984. January 6. The Hibernia, with the deep sea portion of the New Zealand cable, is expected in about three weeks. Several officers of the companyare now in Melbourne. De Murska leaves for New Zealand at the close of the month. . . , . < A Scarlet fever has broken out;at the Protestant Orphanage. The head teacher died. All the State schools on .Emerald Hill in the vicinity of the institution remain closed. A match for £SOO a-side, a mile and a-half, over hurdles, between Cronstadt and Stranger,

Thirty-six entries were made for the Australian Cup, and forty for the Newmarket Handicap, to be run at the autumn meeting at Elemington. A fire at Vaughan's steam sawmills, at Grenfell, destroyed the whole of the buildings and stock, inflicting great loss. The whole was uninsured. . , The revenue returns published show tne revenue for the past year at £4,215,524, being an increase on the previous year of £161,660. The Tasmanian year’s revenue shows a surplus of nearly £250,000. Heavy rains for the last few days have caused floods, and done considerable damage to fclie main line of railway between Hoss and Campbelltown. Several persons were drowned in attempting to cross the river. Sydney, January 12. In consequence of the departure of the Bingarooma for New Zealand yesterday, there is only one day’s later news. The Secretary to the Philadelphia Commis..sion leaves on Friday by the City of ban Francisco for Philadelphia. The drought continues, and much distress is anticipated. Maize and flour is rising.

Brisbane, January 12. A fearful gale has occurred at Gympie. The local courthouse and Varieties Theatre were levelled with the ground, and several other buildings destroyed.
