The work upon the tramway in the neighborhood of the Manawatu has at last taken a start, and large bodies of Maoris may be seen clearing the scrub, and ditching, from Foxton to the Oroua bridge. Tenders are being called not only for laying the tramway but for working it optionally for a period of one or five years. The “Wanganui Chronicle” says that the new District Highways Bill is excessively unpopular in the districts of Tnrakina and .Rangitikei, where a protest is being signed against it. The “ Chronicle ” says the system of rates is very expensive, very irritating, and very unfair.
