THE CARTERTON BUSH FIRE.
The disastrous effects of the recent bush fire at Carterton is not to be judged by the actual money value of the property destroyed. A statement which has been supplied to us shows that the sufferers are all of the class who form the mainstay of this or any other country—the industrious small farmer class. Several inhabitants of the district have formed a committee of inquiry with the view of putting an impartial valuation upon the houses and stock destroyed, and we have been kindly furnished with the results of their labors which set down the destruction at the round sum of £IOOO, divided as follows: Mr Parker, barn, £10; four tons hay. at £3 10s, £l4; 17 chains fencing, total, £4l. Mr Dixon, cow shed and barn, £5 ; \ ton bay, £1 15s; 25 chains fencing, total, £3l 15s. Mr Clay, cow shed and pig sty, £2; 3 tons hay, £lO 10s ; 25 chains fencing, total, £37 10s. Mr King, dwelling house, shop and outbuildings, £3O; 3 tons hay, £lO 10s; oats, &c, £4; 30 chains fencing; total, £74 10s. Mr Crawford, house, £SO. Mr Bosley, house, £25. Mr Wiltshire, house, tools, &c, £2O; 16 chains fencing; total, £36. Mr Walker, 14 chains fencing, £l4. Mr Wakelin, barn and hay, £5 ; 60 chains fencing; total, £65. Mr Hooper, 12 chains fencing, £l2. Mr Budd, cow shed and barn, £8; 1 ton bay, £3 10s; 5 chains fencing; total, £l6 10s. Mr Strang, house and barn, £ls; 33 chains fencing; total, £4B.
