The coach drives down the Buller Gorge to the West Coast of the South Island, and through the Otira Gorge from Westland into Canterbury, are world-famed. Cobb and Co.'s coaches, well horsed and skilfully driven, convey passengers through scenes of wild and thrilling beauty. The Buller River route runs for two days' journey through the finest of mountain and forest regions. The Otira Road, a magnificent piece of engineering work, pierces the recesses of the Alps, and crosses the great divide by passes over 3000 feet above the sea, surrounded by mountain pyramids, and overlooked by snowfields and glaciers. THE WEST COAST. Beautiful bush-belted Westland Lakes— Kanieri, Mahinapua, lanthe, Mapounka. Vast primeval forests, climbing to the Alpine range, threaded by ice-fed rivers. Unique glaciers — the Franz Josef and the Fox — descend to within seven hundred feet of the sea-level, and are surrounded by beautiful bush of semi-tropical luxuriance. THE SOUTHERN ALPS. A noble system of icy mountains, with many peaks considerably over 10,000 feet above the level of the sea. Immense glaciers. The Great Tasman Glacier (eighteen miles long) is the largest in the temperate regions of the earth. The Mt. Cook Hermitage (Government Hotel) "is situated in the heart of the grandest Alpine scenery, close to the terminal faces of several great glaciers. Three days from Christchurch or Dunedin by rail and coach. Government Hotel at Lake Pukaki en route. Splendid Alpine ascents and Glacier excursions. Lake Wakatipu, the most easily accessible of the great Southern Lakes, is I one day's journey by train from Dunedin to Invercargill. Lofty mountains j ranging up to 9,000 feet in height surround the Lake. Government steamers ; enchanting water excursions. Numerous interesting land trips ; Alpine ascents. Lakes Wanaka and Hawea are reached by coach from Queenstown (Wakatipu). Excellent Deer Stalking around Hawea. Hotel accommodation at Queenstown and elsewhere. . Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau rank among the loveliest lakes in the world Labyrinthine coastlines, indented in deep fiords, walled by snowcapped mountains and dotted with wooded islands. Exquisite landscapes and water lews. Reached by train and coach from Dunedin or Invercargill. OVERLAND TO MILFORD SOUND. The most magnificent walking tour in the world. Train and coach to Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau ; foot-track from the head of Lake Te Anau to the head of Milford Sound, through scenes of the wildest grandeur. The immense Canyon of the Clinton, McKinnon's Pass, and the triple leap of the Sutherland Falls (1904 feet), the highest in the world, are features of the trip Milford Sound is world-famous lor its tremendous precipices and mile-high mountain palisades, its beautiful waterfalls, and the incomparable luxuriance of its forest scenery. .
