Tarawera^Waimangu Tour.

Chief amongst the side-trips in the Eotorua District is that to Tarawera, Eotomahana, and the mammoth Waimangu Geysei, which frequently shoots its waters, mud and stones a thousand feet into the an. The coach loute passes the beautiful lakes of Tikitapu and Eotokakahi and lands passengeis at the ruined village of Wairoa, which was destroyed by the Tarawera eruption in 1886. Thence boats convey the visitors across Lake Taiaweia, under the shadow of the volcano. A shoit poitage is crossed and a boat trip is made across Eotomahana, a wonderful lake whereon visitois may be rowed over boiling water. Thence the visitois walk to the Waimangu Geyser and take the return coach m time to reach Eotorua again the same evening. Government house at Waimangu for the accommodation of visitors.

Lake Waikaremoana.

This fine lake, surrounded by gieat cliffs and forest-clothed mountains, is accessible from Wairoa (Hawke's Bay). The most convenient route is that via Napier, whence coaches and coastal steamers run to Wairoa. From Wairoa a coach leaves for Waikaremoana bi-weekly at 7am, arriving at the lake the same evening and returning on Tuesdays and Fudays. "Lake House," a large, comfortable, and well-equipped house, established recently by the Government, stands on the shores of Waikaremoana, for the accommodation of tourists. Excellent trout fishing is to be had, and interesting excursions may be made on the lake and also to the lovely little neighbouring lake of Waikare-iti. An oil launch will be available on Lake Waikaremoana next summer. MORERE may be visited from Wairoa. It has hot mineial waters, but the baths aie at piesent in a very piimitive state. Hotel accommodation is available.

Hanmer Hot Springs.

These hot mineral springs, at which is established a Government Spa, are situated on a healthy plateau of the North Canterbury Plains, 1218 feet above sea-level. The climate is excellent, the air clear, bracing and invigorating. Hanmer is easily reached in one day fiom Christchurch by train leaving for Culverden at 7.35 a.m., then by coach. Accommodation may be obtained at the Government Spa. Manager, Mr. James Baring Gould. Natural hot mineral water private baths are provided ; also, hot air and douche baths and massage. The springs are sulphuretted saline water possessing valuable properties for both external and internal use in cases of Rheumatism, Gout, certain forms of Indigestion, Kidney complaints, and skin diseases. Inhalation in certain foims of Bronchitis and Asthma is also found effective. Dr Little visits Hanmer Spa on behalf of the Government. A Tennis Court, Croquet Lawn, and Bowling Gieen are provided for the use of the visitors.

Southern Alps. Mount Cook.

The Heimitage Hotel (under the control of the Touiist Depaitment) is situated near Mount Cook (12,349 feet) and within easy distance of the great Tasman Glacier. The Hermitage (2506 feet above sea-level) is reached by rail from Christchurch and Dunedin to Fairhe, thence by coach. On the journey io the Hermitage, a night is spent at Lake Pukaki, where there is a Goveinment Hotel. Guides, hoises, and Alpine equipment obtainable. Comfoi table huts containing bedding and food available at elevations of d5OO feet and 5700 feet. Cook and Son's Coupons accepted at the Hermitage Hotel.

Lake Wakatipu.

The Southein Lakes aie unsuipassecl for the giandeur of their surroundings. Wakatipu is the most easily accessible. Queenstown, on the shores of this lake, under the shadow of Ben Lomond, is reached in one dayfiom Inveicaigill or Dunedin, by train to Kingston, thence by Government steamer 25 miles. From Queenstown the Government steamers mn to the head of the lake, passing scenes of majestic beauty. Meals are piovided on the steamers. Fiom the head of the lake excursions may be made to Mount Earnshaw (9300 feet). Paiadise, the Eoutebuin, and othei places of remarkable scenic chaim. Comfoi table hotels throughout the district.

Lake Te Anau and Milford Sound.

The oveiland loute fiom Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound is one of the finest scenic tiacks known. Te Annu is leached by tiain and coach from Dunedin and Invercargill. The tiain journey fiom Inveicargill is 50 miles, thence a coach journey of 52 miles lands the tiavellei on the shores of Te Anau, the largest of the Southern Lakes. At the head of the lake (which is 38 miles long) Glade House is available for the accommodation of visitois; heie a guide is available for the oveiland Alpine tup. There aie huts at convenient distances on the load to the Southerland Falls, the highest in the world (1904 teet) Accommodation house at Milfoid Sound, in the neighbourhood of and sublime seeneiy. Lake Manapoun is easily accessible fiom Lake Te Anau.
