Hockey Notes.

Hockey nlayers were at last granted a fine day and dry ground," at Day's Bay, on Satuiday last, tno things v. Inch have been conspicuous by their absence during the whole of the season. There was a big muster to witness the final for the senior cup, between United and Wellington, the former w inning by three goals to nil. The Wellington team had many suppoiters, and it was thought that, after the games the United team have been piaving lately and the improvement of the Wellington team, that the latter would just about win, but the United "guns" rose to the occasion, and earned a w ell-deserved victory. Vv'ellington had the best of the first spell, and it was only through the inability of their forward line to take the chances ofFered to them that they failed to score, while United took about the only chance ottered, Organ shooting an easy goal through a mistake on tlie part of Scott. This was the only scoie in the first spell. In the second spell, United showed their superiority, and were far too good for the Wellington team, who seemed to break up, and lose all combination, Organ and Hickson scoring two easy goals, and bringing the total up to three goals to nil. The United defence was very sound, Ashbolt especially playing a fine game , he being w ell supported bv Hicksou and Weybourne. Pearson did all he was called upon to do in a serviceable manner, and made no mistakes Kins and O'Sullivan w ere fair. Hickson and Organ both played dashing games but Smythe was too wellmaiked by Scott to do much. Preston in goal for Wellington, was not up to his usual standard, mis.sin.cr a great deal. Pope and Beeie both worked hard, but made serious- mistakes which put their side m difficulties on moie than one occasion. The halves played well but did not keep in their places enough. Pilkmgton, Bridge, and Allan all worked hard, but seemed to tue towards the end. Bridge received a nasty hit on the face with the ball m the second spell which put him off a lot. Hull made some fine dashes down the field, but failed to take any advantage of them. I must congratulate the United Club on their performance in again winning both cups. They have cer taanly a marvellous record, this being the fifth successive year that they have won the senior cup, and the third time for the juniors. The senior team has only been beaten twice in five years— once by Wellington and once by Karon this year. The play on Saturday was hardly up to the usual standard both teams plavmg below last season's form. The Vivian second defeated Karon second, and so gave the junior cup to United. Karon certainly had hard luck in not winning, but their forw ards weie all too anxious to score, and so lost many easy chances. They had the best of the game throughout. I hear Nelson is sending a representative team across to play the local ' reps" on Saturday. The match between the Aorane^ and Kiwi Ladies' Clubs, to be played at Day's Bay to-morrow (Saturday), should prove an interesting struggle, and well worth watching, as both teams are in good form after the tournament. I predict a win for the Aorangi team.

* One more match to play.
