Hockey.
The inclemency of the weather on Saturday effectually barred the resumption of the championship rounds, so my notes this week must of necessity be very meagre. All the teams turned up in force at the steamer, but the postponement committee wisely decided, not to proceed with the games. The postponed matches are to be played tomorrow, and the big event will be the meeting of the Karori and Wellington Clubs. It will be remembered that on the last occasion these teams met "the Wellington combination won by three goals to two, but this time the suburbanites are confident of their ability to reverse the decision, and, as I hear Wellington will be minus the services of Hull in the forwards, I expect they will just about do so.
One of the Association's best refeiees Mr. Hatch, has given up the whistle ior the stick, and has thrown in his lot with the Vivian Club. He has had some experience of the game in Canterbury, and should prove an acquisition, but Ins absence from the all-too-small ranks of our referees causes a gap that will be hard to fill. •X # ■"*■ The Canterbury Association championship fixtures in the Saturday competition, have been finished, the Sydenham Club beating Addmgton in the final, and securing championship honours for the third successive year. * * * The various ladies' clubs in and about the city are busy just now getting matters into trim for the annual tournament, which is to eventuate in the latter part of August. Six clubs have already expressed their intention of competing, including the redoubtable Craven School team, from Palmerston North, the Wakatu team from Nelson, and the Tarata Club from Christchurch. and, as other replies have yet to come to hand, everything points to the meeting being a thoroughly representative one. * * * The following team has been selected to represent Wairarapa against Wellington, on August Ist at Wellington. — Goal-keeper, Toy ; full-backs, Kitchen and Thwaites', halves, Bnghting. Watts, and King, wings, Bunny and C. King; forwards, J. Fisher, Rawson, and Sellars. The team consists of six Masterton players, and five Cartorton. King (half) will probably be unable to undertake the journey, and it is more than likely Nicholson will be induced to fill the vacancy. The combination is a good one, especially the forwards. The full-backs and goal-keeper are slow, but powerful strikers, while the halves and forwards are all good at "shooting." The Wairarapa team, to play the Wellington junior "reps." on the same day, at Wellington, is — Goal-keeper, Gover • full-backs, Bruce and Brown ; halves, Richards, Nicholson, and McKillop . wings. Bird and Bunting ; forwards, W. Fisher, Gray and Rue. This is the best team obtainable but Gray is the only "shooter" in the forward division. (Continued on page 25.)
