Swimming.
The swimming season was opened at tlie Thoiudon Batlis on Saturday last, in the presence of a fairly large crowd or spectators Sir Robert Stout, after speaking for some time on the great ad\antagesof swimming as aji exercise and <i means of sawng life, wished the various clubs a successful year, and formally dedaied the season opened. Cheeis weie then given for Sir Robeit and Lady Stout. The following are the result*, — Maiden Race, -lOyds — First heat M. Gleeson 1, R Caidno 2, B. Woods 3. Also started 'Dummj" Girdlestone ajid l<] A March ant Second heat G H Mm ray 1 E. F. Richardson 2, J. Da^ 3 The only starters. Final Gleeson 1, Caidno 2, Muirav 3 Youths' Handicap, oOyds — R. Rolhune 4sec 1, G. E. Johnson scr , 2 A J. Styles, 2sec, 3. Also staited H Innes, Bsec, and A. D Thomson, Bsec. The placed men were disqualified for premature starting.
