MAJOR-GENERAL J. D. P. FRENCH.

THE record set up by tins British officer throughout the South African campaign ib in btriking contra&t to that of many others. With every move he has earned distinction and commendation. He has established a reputation as a brilliant cavahy leader and tactician. The battle of Elandslaagte, one of the most important engagements in Natal, was his. \\ ork, and it was the first time the Boers learned the effect of a cavalry charge. After slipping out of Lady smith, he got away to Colesburg, and there he teased the Boers, and held them at bay until Lord Roberts took him away to the Modder River. He led the cavalry division in the relief of Kimberley, rounded up Cronje at Paardeburg, and led the advance guard on the march to Bloemfontein, Pretoria, and right down the Eastern Transvaal to Barberton. He has, during; the past fortnight, again swept the eastern district, and with good effect. General French has, by his sterhn" merits, established a "rand reputation, just as Suratura tea has earned the praises of everyone by the excellence of its flavour and quality. Suratura comes from Ceylon, and is guaranteed not blended with Indian, China, or any cheap or inferior teas>.
