THERE appears to be quite a plethora of child-beating cases in the North Island lately. The latest to claim attention is that of a twelve year old Eketahuna girl named Violet Beale. She was thrashed by her father, William Beale, and also by his housekeeper, Miss Hodgkinson " because she was a naughty girl, and had played with boys and girls whose company she had been forbidden to keep." According to Dr Murray Aynsley her left arm was badly bruised above the elbow, and there was a mass of bruises on the back and right arm. Blood had been drawn, a riding whip or cane having been used.
