* The Manganui party consisted of 600 men, headed by the chiefs Warikawri, Akewa, and Ewarri, together with 800 from Hokianga,. headed.by the.great chief Areoa; r al§6 the Wangaroa natives, 800, beaded by Ururaa; and 'SOO from the Bay of Islands, headed by the chiefs Rewa, Tarea, Moko, William Korokoro. The opposite, or Noble's party, consisted of his own tribe and-those of the following chiefs: Townui, Timoti, Minreng,. and Efepi, in all about-1,500, together with 800 from about the North Cape, headed by his father-in-law, Popea. Of Noble's party, two of the principal chiefs, Timoti and Townui, were killed, and he himself having disgracefully fled, has lost .the rank of a chief.;
