THE MAYOR’S DINNER.
On Monday Evening last, the Worshipful the Mayor of Wellington gave his first public dinner to the Aldermen and gentlemen of the Reserved List of the borough, and several private friends. There were present, on the occasion, in addition to the above, the following magistrates : Dr. Evans, D.C.L., Mr. Sheriff St. Hill, Capt. Macdonough of the police, Capt. Smith, R.A., Mr. Hanson, Mr. Moreing, Mr. Clifford, Mr. White, and Mr. Fitzherbert. The Collector of the Customs, the Law officers of the Courts, and the Harbour master. The dinner was served up in the large room at Barrett’s Hotel, which, both as regards the quality, and abundance of the good things of this life, as well as the efficient attendance, might challenge competition with any establishment in any of the neighbouring colonies of much longer standing than ours. The party would have been larger, but, for the arrival of the Clydeside on Saturday evening, and the avowal of the determination that she would sail again for England in 48 hours, which prevented several gentlemen from enjoying the banquet—no doubt,, as they said, much to their regret.
The following toasts were responded to with every demonstration of good feeling, and the communication which Dr. Evans, as legal adviser of the Company, felt himself authorised to make to the meeting, respecting their determination to out-do Sam Slick himself, by prosecuting on an extended and liberal scale, their intentions of laying open the millions of acres of fertile land by means of a road up the entire valley of the liutt, and from thence over the range of mountains which separate the great Wairarapa district from that of Port Nicholson, gave great satisfaction: — The Queen.
