EXTRACTS FROM SYDNEY PAPERS.
ALDERMEN MAGISTRATES, (From the Sydney Morning Herald). The Governor has shewn so much courtesy to our capital as to entitle him: to be enrolled among its best friends. To his calm perseverance, in the face of an opposition as obstinate as it was groundless, are we for its elevation to the dignity of a Body Corporate. Then, again, we are indebted to His Excellency for the honourable appellation of “ City ” and for the more substantial boon of a large endowment in aid of the police and general revenues of the city. _ Subsequently, His Excellency has recognised the Mayor’s claim to be styled “Right Worshipful,” and 1 recommended its confirmation to the royal fountain
of all British honours. He has, morever, just added to the dignity of our Chief Magistrate by constituting him a Justice for the territory, thfe Act of Council having created him a Magistrate for the city only. And further —we understand it is in His Excellency’s contemplation to ‘ confer the magisterial office, from the commencement of the ensuing year, upon •certain of. our aldermen. For all these marks of generous consideration for. our colonial metropolis, we are bound to hold the name of Gipps in grateful remembrance.
