FAREWELL.

(Addressed to a Lady.)

“ Fahewell !”—that word has oft been said, And oft must yet be spoken ; 'Tis murmured o’er the unconscious dead, In accents low and broken. “ Farewell !” the lover softly sighs, While pressing to his bosom, With tear-drops trembling in her eyes, His chosen virgin blossom.

‘‘ Farewell!” wc say, when friends depart, To distant regions ranging ; And cherish, deep within the heart, Their memory unchanging. Then, fare thee well, my gentle friend ! Bright be thy every morrow ! May peace and joy thy steps attend, Untouched by care or sorrow ! And, though on earth wc meet no more, This hope, at least, is given, To meet upon a happier shore— There’s no “farewell” in heaven.
