WELLINGTON EXCHANGE.

The Second Annual Meeting of the Proprietors of the Wellington Exchange, was called yesterday at 4 o’clock, for the purpose of receiving the report of the officers of that Institution, when only two shareholders attended, neither of those parties belonging to the Committee. We cannot help expressing our surprise at the apathy exhibited by the members of the com-; mittee, who appear to consider their duties to have ceased on the acceptance of office. We would earnestly suggest the propriety of a speedy meeting of the shareholders, and the election of a more efficient committee, as the interests of the Institution, (which might be of considerable benefit to the Colony, if pioperly conducted), suffer materially from the negligence of its officers. We have attended every Public Meeting that has been called, yet have had frequently to retire without any business being transacted, in consequence of the nonattendance of the members of the Committee. — Communicated.

We understand that upon the morning after the late fire, an offer was made by the Maories, to the Police Magistrate, through Mr. Clarke, to construct, free of cost, several houses as a temporary shelter to the persons whose dwellings had been destroyed. This offer was not accepted, on the ground that the calamitous result of the fire was mainly, or rather entirely,

attributable to the Maori houses which had been suffered to remain along the J)each. The good will of the Natives was not, however, confined to this offer. Understanding that a subscription was being raised for the relief of the sufferers, they made a collection at their cliapel at Pipitca, on Sunday last, at which they collected 4/. Is. 6d., which is to be placed at the-dispo-sal of the Committee ; and they intend to make a similar collection at Petoni. This is equally creditable to the Settlers and to the Natives, and exhibits, in a striking manner, the kindly relations which have been established in this place between the two races. We give below a list of the amount already subscribed towards the relief of the sufferers by the late fire. PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION. List of Subscriptions paid, and deposited in the Bank, up to 3 o’clock Monday, 14th of November :

Subscribed, not yet paid, but expected hourly. £37 17 6 The Committee sits every day, at the Town Hall Exchange, at 11 o’clock a.m., where, ano% at the Bank, contributions will be thankfully received.
