NEW ZEALAND COPPER.

(From the Colonial Observer)

From researches recently made on the great Barrier Island, at the mouth of the Thames, in the adjacent colony of New Zealand, the existence of rich and extensively distributed ores of copper has been ascertained. Several specimens of these ores have at different tiihes been brought to Sydney, and it appears that the ore lias also been assayed in England,- and found in richness to equal the copper ores of the Brazils, the produce of a surface sample being 30 per cent, of pure metal. A new field is thus opened for the employment to an extent which is at present incalculable of colonial capital and industry. Its conveyance to England would cost much less via this port than it now costs for the carriage of the AmesfcymJJri§§, so chat in every respect there could hftrSly be up a more valuable souf&f < wf propp<|ri|^&^* An attempt? r making to render these resources available, by the formation of a company in Sydney, with a capital of £20,000, for the purpose of carrying on the necessary mining operations, and providing the means of transmit to the English market of the mineral obtained. Companies of this kind have, it must be confessed, in many instances here, proved failures ; but so far as we can judge by the prospectus which has been published, the originators of the present plan seem to have profited by the example of the past, and every reasonable precaution has been taken to secure the judicious application of the money raised in the shape of deposit, from those disposed to share in the undertaking. Interested, as we are, in the opening up of every new field of industry, we trust the present undertaking may prove successful.
