VALUE OF COROMANDEL GOLD.
The following assay of a parcel of gold, forwarded by Mr. David Nathan through Messrs. Moses and Co. to the Sydney Mint, has been handed to us by that gentleman for publication. Considerable discontent amongst the mining population lias been experienced, by what has been considered an unwillingness upon the part of our merchants to give a fair price for gold dust. Mr. David Nathan purchased this gold at tho rate of £3 per ounce, and is consequently a loser by the transaction to the extent of nearly Gs. per ounce:—
"Purchase Ticket. Royal Mint, Sydney, 2nd September, LS62. Memorandum of the particulars of a purchase of gold bullion iron M. Moses ami Co., the value of which has this day been paid: Date of deposit in the mint—29th August, 1802. Weight before melting OZS. 32.40 „ after „ „ 29.48 Assay report of fineness ~ -732 Standard weight ,23.540 Value at £3 17s. IOJd. per oz £9l 13 2 Mintchargeat I.J percent,£l 2 11 ( -.., ]r n Gold duty €2 13 ) " Net value -CB7 17 3 S. S. Severn, For the Deputy Master. The following letter explaining the puichasc ticket accompanied it: — Sydney, September 2, ISG2. David Nathan, Esq., Auckland, Dear Sir. —We avail of the immediate departure of the 'Kate,' to hand you herein report of the sale of gold at the Sydney" Mint, which you will observe realised a very low rate, which we have calculated to be £2 14s, 2fd. per ounce, nett. Wc place tho fact before you thus early, in order that you may be better guided in future purchases.— Wc are, dear sir, in haste, yours truly, M. Moses & Co.
