AUCKLAND STOCK AND SHARE MARKET.

Auckland Stock Exchange. There is a very good demand at the piesent time for New Zealand Bank Shares at 20s. premium, and one or two transfers have been effected during the last few days at that rate, perceive that the Aucklander of today has distinctly asserted mat the quotation of this shock in my last report was incorrect, and that the value of these Shares ranged "from 10s. to 15s, premium each." In reply I beg to state that the current price is on* per cent beyond the amount of calls paid, and in support or that valuation, I am open to buy any number of them up to 500 at 20s. premium per Share, nl . The New Zealand Insurance Shares are viewed favourably by the public, and as an evidence of the estimation in wh.cn they are held, a few of them have realized, during the past week, a premium of £2 per Share. ..... Some enquiries have lately been made about the Waihoihot Coal Shares and the confidence in this Stock has considerably increased in consequence of the demand that now exists for the Company’s Coal. 150 tons of which have recently been shipped by the Vistula in the Manukau for Lyttleton. The information wnich has reached me this week from Coromandel has been but slight. The leader lately struck in Keven’s reef, is I am told highly aurifcious, and has enhanced the value of the holdings in that undertaking, and r atsed the expectations of the adventurers in the reefs contiguous. [From the “ Herald,” August 30th.]

The Share market has been rather more buoyant during the week, and several transactions have taken place in the minor securities, although not to any very large amount. There is still capital seeking investment in the shares of our colonial banks, but at present there are none in the market, and the few that have lately been offered, are readily taken at full ■ ales. Bank of New South Wales shares are firm and have been sold at an Improvement of Gs. per share, and at an advance on this price there are now buyers. Commercial Bank shares are inquired for, but none offering. Australian Joint Stock Bank shares are a little firmer, and have been dealt in at advance of 2s. GJ. per share. Union Bank shares are firm at quotations. Steam shares are in some request. The shares of the Australasian Steam Navigation and Hunter River New Steam Navigation Companies have changed hands at full rales, and have an upward tendency. Clarence and Richmond River Steam Navigation sharer are firm, and have improved 12s. Gd. per share on last sale. In Insurance shares there have been several sales;— General Marine are unaltered in price: Sydney Insurance shares have not been dealt in since the late fire, but are now offered freely at last quotation ; Pacific Fire aud Marine Insurance shares are hardly so firm, and have declined 2s. Gd. per shaie. United Fire and Life Insurance has been sold since the allotmentjat from 2s. Gd. to ss. per share premium. Wallsend Coal shares continue in request, and the fully paid-up shares have advanced si. per share. Moruya silver Mining Company's shares are steady at quotations. The following are the prices at which sales have been made during the week:— Union Bank, £42 per share, ex dtv.; Bank of New South Wales, £42 IGs. per share; Australian Joint Stock Bank, £ll 5s and ,C 11 7 s . (id. per share; Australasian Steam Navigation Company, £3O His. per share; Hunter River New Steam Navigation Company, £lfi 15s. per share, cum div.; Clarence and Richmond River Steam Navigation Company, £l3 10s. per share, ex div.; General Assurance Company, £n Ids. per share; Pacific Fire and Marine Insurance Company, £2 2s. The following table will shew the ruling prices of our securities, as well as the rates at which business has teen transacted during the week:—

Business during the week has continued quiet and there has been very little alteration to notice in our market. With the exception of some sales of tea and sugars the sales at auction have generally been unimportant. The news from the diggings continues good, it is, therefore, expected that a brisk trade will soon set in, and make up for the present dull times. Flour.— The market is steady, and prices are unaltered. The millers’ quotations are still £l4 for fine flour. Wheat, ss. <)d. to (j*. Liquids. —Ale and Porter in bulk are in moderate demand a 1 last quotations. Brandy is steady ; Martell’s quoted at 12s. Ltd. to 13». ; Hennessy’s, 12s, (id. Rum is still dull of sale : 30 0.p,, 3s. parcels were placed at auction by Messrs W. Dean & Co., at rates that would leave a loss to importers. Teas are firm, and sales of congous (medium quality) h aTe been made at £7 10s. per chest. On Wednesday Messrs, w. Dean & Co. offered at auction the balance of the cargo of fine teas ex John Stephenson. The sale was well attended, and the competition was brisk, and the whole was sold at the following rates ;—Congou, £7 10s. to £9 12s. fid. per chest. Pekoe, 2s fid. per lb. Boxes of Congou, 255. to 295. per box. Green teas brought £6 15'. per chest. Fine green teas, 2s. fid. to 3,. per lb. Sugars are a little better, and the rates obtained for Java sugars, offered at auction by Messrs. W. Dean 4: Co., were ronsidered by the trade as showing a slight improvement on late sales, although they would leave a loss to importers. Mauri, tius sugars ex Eleonore, were sold by Messrs Richardson & Wrench, to-day, at from £'2fi to £36 per ton. Cofkee is in better request. At auction, Messrs. W. Dean & Co. obtained the following prices:—Java, fid. to Kid. per lb j plantation, lid. per lb.; native, «]d. to Bjd. per lb.; Manila, BJd. to 9J. per lb. RICB is not so much in demand, and Patna is quoted at £25 per ton. Salt is dull of sale. Liverpool, ,£4 per ton. Oilmen’s Stores are in moderate request, but as stocks are still heavy, prices are unaltered. Tobacco.— There is no alteration to notice in tobacco this week. There have been no transactions of sufficient importance to test the market; prices are therefore still nominal. TOBACCO. The following statement respecting the present stocks of tobacco in the colonies has been handed to us for publication, by a gentleman thoroughly conversant with the siale of the tobacco market : Stock ok Tobacco in the Australian Colonies, Julv 31st, 1803. lbs. Melbourne 1,505,940 Sydney 1,335,512 Adelaide, July 19 25,551 Geelong, July 19 11,504 Hobart Town, July 23 -r 38,979 Launceston 4,332 Auckland 26,400 Other ports in New Zealand, partly estimated 25,d0n 3.013.278 From which deduct fit only for sheepwash 650,000 2.383.278 The Melbourne stock is taken from the Bond returns of July 21st, as also all the other colonies, except Sydney. The con. sumption from that date to the 31st, would be about equal to a few small shipments in transit not included in stocks to the 21st. In addition to the quantity put down as sheepwash, it must be borne in mind there is a considerable quantity that would only rank as such. Since high prices have ruled, a great deal of inferior has been taken out of bond, and either mixed with the better qualities or sold at low price?. In the first half-year of 1861 1,155,425 lbs. was destroyed in Melbourne alone. Very little has been destroyed this year, the consumption being upon the old slock, which is now nearly or quite exhausted. Duty has recently been paid on small quantities. In estimating the quantity of sheepwash used in other places, there are no means of ascertaining it; but, judging from the quantities exported to New Zealand from England and the colonies, it is believed to be much iu excess of the estimated quantity.— Sydney Empire.
