proceeded to make a few remarks upon what he could not but consider the unfair interpretation which had been put upon his absence while at Coromandel; he could assure the Board that no one more than himself was determined to carry out the work before them, and he thought that the allusion to the movive of his absence was as uncalled for as it was incorrect. Mr. Beveridoe explained his reasons for making the statement he did, and the explanation having been received by the Chairman, business proceeded. The Secretary then read the following communication received from the Deputy-Superintendent:— " Superintendent's Office, "Auckland, August 18th, 18G2. " Sir,—l have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of date 13th inst., transmitting request of the City Board of Works for an advance of* the sum of £l5O to meet the current expenses of the Board. " The sum of £l5O will be immediately paid to the credit of the Board with the New Zealand Bank, it being understood that tho advance is made upon the conditions, —as to its application and the time of its repayment,—specified in my letter of data July 21st ultimo. I have, &c, "Daniel Pollen, "For the Superintendent. " The Chairman of the " City Board of Works, Auckland." A letter was also read from Mr. James Stewart, C.E., signifying his acceptance of the appointment of engineer to"the Board. Mr. Cadman moved " That tho engineer be instructed to examine the plan and specification ot the main sewer, and to report to the Board his opinion whether there cannot be a considerable saving of expenditure by the modification of the work, without injury to the stability or permanent character of the sewer." Mr. Finlay seconded the motion, which was put and carried. Mr. Cadman rose to move—" That the engineer be requested to examine Chaneery-lane and its neighbourhood, West Queen-street and its neighbourhood, and to report to the Board the best and cheapest manner of making some sanitary improvement in those localities; also to report to the Board what further steps the Board can take to improve the sanitary state of the city generally." Mr. Finlay suggested that Elliott-street, one of the worst in the city, bo included. Mr. Cadman" agreed to this suggestion, remarking on the filthy state of Chancery-lone and part of West Queen-strcct. Mr. Beveridoe seconded the motion: alluding to the "Southern Cross" office, in Chancery-lane, they could never expect that good buildings would be erected where such nuisances existed as in the streets alluded to, and to remedy such evils was ono of the first works they were called upon to perform. Mr. Cadman moved, "That the engineer be instructed to furnish the Board with a list of the various works and their approximate cost, which may be necessary to be undertaken during the ensuing twelve months." Mr. Finlay seconded this motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr. Macready moved, " That the motion standing in Mr. Darby's name be adopted:—That instructions be given to the engineer to examine the city levels thoroughly, and to report to the Board his opinion as to their general correctness; also, to report to the Board any alterations or modifications that he may think necessary for the public convenience, that the levels may bo as perfect and complete as possible; the report to be brought up on Monday, September Bth, 1862." Seconded by Mr. Cadman. Mr. Finlay thought the time should be extended, say to October. This was agreed to, and the second week in October was the time named. Mr. Finlay then moved, and Mr. Beveridge seconded, a motion, " That the Chairman advertise for tenders for carts for cleansing the streets."—Carried. Messrs.
