DR. LIVINGSTON.
[From the " Otago Colonist," July 15.]
There are few of oar readers who have not lingered, with pleasure and interest, over the varied page of African Exploration and Discovery, as we find it " now grave now, gay," in Dr. Livingstone's able and elaborate bopk of travels. We have a deeper feeling for and a larger sympathy with that earnest undaunted Missionary, braying every peril of climate, savage, and wild animal, in the cause of Christianity and science, than wo can call up for any other of the African . Explorers, even for the great Du Chaillu, of Gorilla memory. It is : with much regret that wo announced a report of the death of this bravo and single-minded man. The namo of Dr. Livingstone is as familiar as a household word, amongst the civilised nations of the world, and if it bo true that death has brought his life and labours to a close, the intelligence will create a profound sensation through all the ranks of philanthropise men. If the fact of his deccaso were estabf lished beyond a doubt, we should not feel that we were rendering due justice to hia memory by a mere cursory allusion ,to the event, but as. we cling to the hope that the report may yet be contradicted, we abstain from further comment. In the Argus of the 16th inßt. we find the following paragraph extracted from the Geelong Advertiser. It is sufficiently circumstantial to make us fear that the information is too true:.—
"Da. LiyiNasTONK.—The ship. Boanerges, which arrived in Jlobson's Bay on Thursday, brings news from the Cape of Good Hope of the death of Dr. Livingstone. We have very lew particulars regarding the event. Ho had returned unwell within the limit of settlement, and there died. Wo have no Capo papers, and give this news on the authority of a passenger by the B.mnergcs The cam.ie of i tin, hip calling at the Cape was w.< u t; of. water,'
