THE AUCKLAND RACES, FOR 1855.
It will he seen, by Advertisement, that there is to be but two day’s Racing at the next Meet; but that much larger Prizes are to be offered. The Maiden Plate, to be run for the first day, has been augmented to £IOO, —And the Metropolitan Plate, to be contested on the second day, is to he increased to £BO, —In addition to this, there is to be a Maori Plate of £6O; and as the Natives have all along evinced a lively interest in the sports of the Turf, and have, year by year, shown a disposition to compete with Englishmen, in these their own peculiarly national sports, it is to be hoped that the races of 1055,b0th in the spirit of their details, as well as In the number and character of the horses brought into the field, will exhibit a striking improvement upon the arrangements of every preceding year. Horse Racing is a matter of peculiar interest in all the colonies; and in none is the sport more ardently pursued than in New Zealand. Already, there are earnest efforts (Vide Advertisement) making for the “ renewal of the Great Nelson Trial Stakes,” of 10 sovereigns each, with 50 sovereigns added by the Turf Club, This Race is to come off at the Nelson Meeting, in March, 1858, and is to be run for by the produce of mares in New Zealand of the season 1853-4. Twenty-five gentlemen have already named the stock they intend to bring forward for this Race; and among the number we perceive Mr. 11. llardington, and Mr. Hargreaves, of Auckland, so that there is every probability of the horseflesh, and the Sporting Proprietary of New Zealand being abundantly represented upon that great equestrian occasion— C* m.inculcated.
