SYDNEY COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

Herald Office, Friday Evening, October 28.

The business of Hie week has been entirely interrupted by the unpropitious state of the weather, added to the news from England. The latter notwithstanding itr dislocated character, has been read by.all with the deepest possible interest, and speculations with regard to the future have been hazarded most freely. We shall not be able for a time to ascertain the probable effect that the large shipments of which we are advised will produce upon this market; but, as far as the fluid portion of them is concerned, we can have no more conclusive evidence of its extraordinary strength than in the sale of Mr. Dean’s on Thursday, and of j»hich we subjoin a report. Figures in connection with particular items of import will,°we are awaie, at first sight, appear very large; but if persons would only take the trouble to go into a rough calculation with regard to the monthly consumption of the colony, we are quite sure that for the next half year they would see no necessity for being startled at each publication of a ship's manifest. It must never bo forgotten that in a country like this the demand will not only increase the ratio of the population, but also in proportion as men acquire means and become familiarised with the social comforts of life. We learn from late advices that at New York flour had dec iued about 2s. 3d. per barrel, but Indian corn was in demand at higher rates; and at London on the Bth of August, wheat showed a reduction of 3s. per quarter on the rates of the previous week. This was attributed to the favourable prospects of the harvest, and the heavy supplies from abroad. It is remarkably interesting to watch the keen competition between the several English Companies in respect to steam communication with Australia. The first of a line of steamers, which is to perform the voyage with regularity in 35 days, is now building at London, and will, it is said, be ready in about fifteen months from the present time. Shipments were going on steadily, and there was a tendency to an advance iu freights; the intelligence however, with regard to the serious depression in this market had not, of course, reached homej but, the moment it does so, the aspect of affairs will, we believe be entirely changed. Of this we can know nothing for the next two month?.

A most important sale of wines, spirits, and beer, took place at the stores of Messrs Montefiore, Graham, and Co,, in O'Gonnell-street, on Thursday last. Mr. Dean was the Auctioneer. There was a very large buying company present, and the result of the sale must have been highly satisfactory. The following are the descriptions of the several parcels sold, together with the prices obtained, viz., sherry, in butts, hogsheads, and quarter-casks, 4s, lOd. to 7s. 6d.; London bottled ditto, 19s. to 295. On the same day Messrs. Purkis and Lambert sold, at PolVd’s Bonded Stores, Queen’s-place, the following lots of tobacco and cigars, viz., 15 half-tierces Barret’s twist, at Is. lid. per lb.; 12 boxes cavendish, at lOd.; 30 kegs Dunlop’s twist and lb., at ll|d. to Is.; and 5 c;ises cigars, at Is. per lb. The following properties were this day disposed of by Mr. Mcrt, viz.:—A block of land with the erections thereon, situate and being Nos. 155 and 157, Castlereaghstreet, the whole occupying a frontage of 50 feet, by a depth of 129 feet, for £2200. Two budding allotments, each having a frontage of 18 feet to Bisbanestreet, by’ a depth of 53 feet, at 425. 6d. per foot. The arrivals for the week, exclusive of our regular traders, are: two ships and a barque, from London, two ships, two barques, and a steamer, from Liverpool; n schooner, via Melbourne, from Boston ; a brig from Oporto ’ two barques from Java ; a schooner from Calcutta ; a barque from Sourabaya; cutter, from the South Sea Islands ;; and a barque, from Batavia. The cargoes from England, with the exception of that of the Caroline, comprise manufactures and general merchandise, with a proportion of building materials and framed houses. The Caroline, emigrant ship from Liverpool is bound for Moreton Bay, and her cargo (coals) for Callao. The schooner, from Boston, being on her way to San Francisco, will, we presume, have little cargo to leave. The remainder of the vessels bring the respective descriptions of merchandise belonging to the several ports from which they sailed. SYDNEY MARKETS —Friday.
