After a protracted and exceedingly rough passage, th eDelmar from Sydney has reached our port, bringing a mail which places us in possession of a large number of colonial papers. Their principal contents had been anticipated by previous arrivals, but we observe in them, notwithstanding, several articles which—though scarcely to be called neu's —yet will be worth copying in future numbers as opportunities may offer. We have lo acknowledge and welcome the first two numbers of a new and pro- .. wising weekly journal—The Sydney Englishman. It is said to be “in the squatting interest,” and lo be under the literary management of a gentleman Who arrived some lime since from India, and who was formerly connected with the Calcutta Englishman. However this may be, it comes out in a handsome form, and in its general contents bids fair to be a respectable and valuable acquisition lo the Australasian Press. In the opening address the Editor promises to “consider New South Wales but a portion of England,” and to defend as applicable lo the colony “whatever has been proved lo be go°d antl great * n lhe policy and the government of the mother country,—making due allowance for the difference of circumstances.” This is a sound position, and, if faithfully maintained, will we trust secure extensive support in the colonies,—although “new things in a new world” may be the maxim of some, and although New South Wales has been , jn a sense, “precipitated into a nation.” We have also received a file of San Francisco papers to the 28lh of May, lo which we may return. But they contain no intelligence of any urgent interest.
