The New-Zealander.

AUCKLAND, SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 1853. NEW GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

He just and fear not: Let all the ends thou aim’st at, he thy Country’s, Thy God’s, and Truth’s.

The Executive Council met on Wednesday, for the examination of the Plans and Estimates for the proposed Government House, of which nine had been submitted in competition. After a careful comparison of their respective merits, the premium of SOL for the best Plan was awarded to Mr. Reader Wood, and 20/. to Messrs.. G. Heaphy and J. Baber, conjointly, for the second best. The successful Plans are now open to public view at the Council Chamber. A notification in the Government Gazette states that the remaining Plans will be returned to those to whom they belong on application at the Colonial Secretary’s ofiice. But a general wish prevails (in which we fully concur) that all the Plans should be exhibited for a short lime to public inspection. We understand that the only objection to this being done at once is that possibly the gentlemen who have been unsuccessful competitors may not be willing that their Plans should be so exhibited, at least until their consent had been obtained. As they arc not known, however,—(the envelopes containing the names of the successful competitors only having been opcned)~it is intended that in each case when the owner applies for his Plan he shall be invited to say whether he agrees to its being placed oil public view; and in the event of the parlies most immediately interested concurring, we anticipate that there will be an entire willingness on the part of I lie Government to comply with the wish that has been expressed. We expert that there will be no delay in advertising for Tenders for the work of the proposed building, beyond what is indispensable to the proper preparation of the Specifications, etc.
